Estelle Shook<\/b> a vou\u00e9 toute sa carri\u00e8re comme directrice de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, programmatrice, organisatrice et animatrice communautaire \u00e0 approfondir les liens entre les artistes, le public et le sol. Adrienne. Anne-Marie. Ravi. Votre engagement envers votre art est inspirant et stimulant. Je suis\nhonor\u00e9e d'avoir partag\u00e9 ce parcours avec vous.<\/p>

Le Prix Siminovitch est un cadeau encourageant \u2013 car qui parmi nous, dans le monde du th\u00e9\u00e2tre, n'a jamais dout\u00e9 ou d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9 dans l'exercice de son art ? Mais cette reconnaissance nationale et l'occasion de partager ma pratique avec un public plus large ont profond\u00e9ment boulevers\u00e9 ma perception des possibilit\u00e9s.<\/p>

En tant qu'artiste, j'en suis profond\u00e9ment reconnaissante.<\/p>

Mais plus encore, le Prix Siminovitch proclame au Canada que le th\u00e9\u00e2tre est important. Et en tant que Canadienne, j'en suis extr\u00eamement reconnaissante. Je veux vivre dans un pays qui valorise le th\u00e9\u00e2tre, car cela signifie que nous valorisons l'acte de cr\u00e9ation collaborative. Le fait de voir ensemble. Le fait d'\u00eatre en communaut\u00e9.<\/p>

Le jury reconna\u00eet en moi tous ceux qui cr\u00e9ent du th\u00e9\u00e2tre en p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie, en marge, dans des espaces qui d\u00e9passent les normes th\u00e9\u00e2trales traditionnelles. J'ai consacr\u00e9 une grande partie de ma carri\u00e8re \u00e0 cr\u00e9er du th\u00e9\u00e2tre en plein air, sp\u00e9cifique \u00e0 un site, dans une ferme de l'Okanagan, pour un public local, national et international.<\/p>

Et s'il y a une chose que j'ai apprise au cours de mes ann\u00e9es de pratique dans les domaines litt\u00e9raux, c'est bien celle-ci : la magie que nous recherchons, l'enchantement que nous d\u00e9sirons se trouvent dans la communaut\u00e9. Mais seulement si nous reconnaissons que notre communaut\u00e9 ne se limite pas \u00e0 nos pairs, mais comprend \u00e9galement les personnes avec lesquelles nous ne sommes pas d'accord. Que notre communaut\u00e9 ne se limite pas \u00e0 nos semblables, mais comprend \u00e9galement l'acte cr\u00e9atif brillant et en constante \u00e9volution qu'est le monde naturel.<\/p>

Je crois que l'avenir de notre art consiste \u00e0 tisser davantage de liens dans notre pratique th\u00e9\u00e2trale, \u00e0 cr\u00e9er une plus grande r\u00e9sistance dans le tissu social afin de pouvoir r\u00e9sister aux vents violents et \u00e0 la gr\u00eale battante de cette grande temp\u00eate transformationnelle.<\/p>

Nous devons \u00eatre audacieux.<\/p>

Nous devons sortir notre th\u00e9\u00e2tre dans la rue. Nous devons aller \u00e0 la rencontre de nos communaut\u00e9s l\u00e0 o\u00f9 elles se trouvent. Nous devons puiser dans les histoires les plus anciennes et les plus profondes, o\u00f9 se cachent les v\u00e9rit\u00e9s \u00e9ternelles, et\nles r\u00e9inventer pour notre \u00e9poque. Notre th\u00e9\u00e2tre peut \u00eatre le fil \u00e0 suivre, la lampe qui \u00e9claire le chemin, le cheval qui nous ram\u00e8ne chez nous. En tant qu'artistes de th\u00e9\u00e2tre, nous sommes les mieux \u00e9quip\u00e9s pour accomplir cette t\u00e2che, car notre art est le creuset de tous les arts. Le creuset de l'expression artistique et de l'exp\u00e9rience incarn\u00e9e. Tout le monde ne peint pas ou n'\u00e9crit pas, mais tout le monde agit.<\/p>

Et il est temps d'agir.<\/p>

Je suis ici aujourd'hui parce qu'un groupe d'artistes de th\u00e9\u00e2tre a os\u00e9 quitter la ville, voyageant de ville en ville \u00e0 cheval et en charrette avec des id\u00e9es qui remettaient en question le statu quo conservateur. J'\u00e9tais un enfant de six ans amoureux de la nature et de l'art, debout dans un champ au bord de la route \u00e0 Westwold, lorsque la Caravan Stage Company est pass\u00e9e. Ma m\u00e8re, mes fr\u00e8res et s\u0153urs et moi venions d'arriver \u00e0 la ferme de ma tante, notre Chevrolet Malibu remplie de nos affaires. Nous \u00e9tions pauvres, pauvres au point que ma m\u00e8re touchait des allocations pour ses trois enfants. Jusqu'alors, ma vie s'\u00e9tait d\u00e9roul\u00e9e dans les limites \u00e9troites de notre statut socio-\u00e9conomique.<\/p>

Et en regardant passer ces roulottes et ces chevaux Clydesdale comme un fabuleux mirage, j'ai soudain compris que le monde \u00e9tait plein de myst\u00e8res et de possibilit\u00e9s. Cette vision m'a soutenu tout au long de ma vie, et je serai \u00e9ternellement reconnaissant pour le cadeau que ces artistes m'ont fait ce jour-l\u00e0. Et je poursuivrai cette vision, \u00e0 la recherche d'un th\u00e9\u00e2tre qui ne vise rien de moins qu'une rencontre avec le myst\u00e8re au c\u0153ur de l'existence et du divertissement, et une pratique communautaire vivante, expressive et accessible \u00e0 tous.<\/p>
