One day they stepped out of the van and noticed \u201c\u2026the smell of sun hitting grass, snow mold, things melting, things starting to grow\u2026 And that\u2019s when I thought, I might need to move back home.\u201d They\u2019re telling me this on a video call from Saskatoon, where they were born and raised. \u201cCreativity lives here different,\u201d they continue. \u201cIt feels <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good to be back.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, MacLean is a big city lover, self-avowed. \u201cSometimes, I wish I was a bit more outdoorsy,\u201d she admits. After University she got her acting training at <a href=\"https:\/\/ent-nts.ca\/en\/\">National Theatre School<\/a> (NTS) in Montreal, where she appreciated the chance to learn directly from working professionals, but especially, loved living in a brand-new city \u201cwhere I could explore who I was.\u201d She\u2019s recently back from Toronto, where she got to spend precious time with friends, \u201cgetting past the catch-up, and then you just talk\u2026 That\u2019s my favourite thing.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MacLean says they\u2019ve always been a bit of a performer. They recall organizing cousins to do lip-sync battles as a child, and pretending to be Rosie O\u2019Donnell, conducting imaginary interviews from the staircase of the family home. \u201cWe used to have \u2018Joke of the Day\u2019,\u201d they remember. \u201cI was always trying to be really funny with my family.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she graduated in 2018, opportunities for Indigenous artists were multiplying. \u201cI don\u2019t think it has ever spiked that high before,\u201d she marvels. She connected with the national Indigenous theatre community, and revelled in bringing her M\u00e9tis culture and experience to the stage. We agree that things have changed on the national scene somewhat since then. In 2020 the pandemic shut down all live entertainment in Canada for nearly two seasons. In its aftermath, many companies continue to struggle. That may be why some seem more hesitant to present their mostly Settler audiences with too much that\u2019s unfamiliar or untested.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, MacLean\u2019s professional trajectory has been remarkable. In 2020, they were cast in the world premiere of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mqlit.ca\/plays-musicals\/women-of-the-fur-trade\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women of the Fur Trade<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Frances Koncan at the <a href=\"https:\/\/royalmtc.ca\/\">Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre<\/a>: a satirical retelling of the story of the Red River Rebellion from the perspective of three women, Ojibwe, Settler, and M\u00e9tis. The piece is meaningful to MacLean for many reasons, including romantic. In fact they interrupt the interview to dash across the room, pull something off the wall, and hold it up to the screen. It\u2019s a framed photo of them and their partner, whom they met when they were both cast in the production. The keepsake even includes a ticket from that fateful show.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a hiatus during the pandemic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fur Trade <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became a surprise hit, and continues to be produced across the country. She will make her directorial d\u00e9but with it this coming season, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.belfry.bc.ca\/\">Belfry Theatre<\/a> in Victoria. \u201cIt\u2019s such a prairie story,\u201d she says, pondering how to bring it home to a Vancouver Island audience. \u201cIt\u2019s a very present reminder. There will always be this Settler government, saying \u2018Just let us do this one thing, just this one little thing,\u2019 &#8212; but it\u2019s been happening for centuries. [Through the Treaties,] it\u2019s something that\u2019s been pressed across the whole country, from one end to the other.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since childhood, MacLean felt an urge for social justice: \u201cI would be crying at night about the Iraq war,\u201d they say, \u201cthose poor children who have no say in this&#8230;\u201d Later, performing in Berthold Brecht\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Threepenny Opera <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">introduced them to the idea of theatre as a way to ignite change. If the piece is successful, they remember thinking, \u201cYou just leave the theatre and go riot. You take it to the streets.\u201d That view of the arts as political engagement has stuck with them. Theatre is more than just a social occasion, they explain, where you go out afterwards \u201cto have cheesecake and wine\u2026 It\u2019s about making you ask, \u2018How long has this been going on? What does this mean to our lives?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That desire to have an impact is one reason MacLean came home to Saskatoon, where she is Artistic Associate at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gtnt.ca\/\">Gordon Tootoosis N\u012bk\u0101n\u012bwin Theatre<\/a> (GTNT), Saskatchewan\u2019s only professional Indigenous theatre company. She\u2019s charged with leading Circle of Voices, a program that introduces primarily Indigenous youth to the many facets of theatre. Photo by Jensine Emeline.<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In turn, MacLean encourages the young participants to dream and create beyond the bounds of typical Western or Canadian theatre. \u201cIndigenous Theatre has been telling stories since time immemorial,\u201d they point out, \u201cThere\u2019s no reason to follow what Western Theatre does. Not everything has to be a kitchen sink drama. There\u2019s so much space for magic realism, telling things out of time, incorporating many voices\u2026\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though MacLean is happily ensconced in Saskatoon, she continues to work across the country, and then brings her professional experience right back to the GTNT youth, telling them \u201cthis is what I just did, this is what I\u2019m working on,\u201d and encouraging them to see theatre as a real option. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing to watch youth spark,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s like the old days at NTS in Montreal, back when MacLean was a student, learning from the pros. Only now, the roles are reversed. They\u2019ve come full circle. \u201cTake what serves you,\u201d they tell the young Indigenous artists, \u201cAnd leave behind what doesn\u2019t. That\u2019s the M\u00e9tis way.
