Larry Tremblay

Larry Tremblay has published around forty books as a playwright, poet, novelist and essayist. He is also a specialist in Kathakali. His work has been translated into around thirty languages. In 2011, his play Cantate de guerre won the SACD Prize and, in 2012, the Michel-Tremblay Prize. In 2014–15–16, his novel L’orangeraie won around fifteen awards, including the Prix des Libraires du Québec, the Prix des collégiens and the Prix des Lycéens Folio, and was published in some twenty countries. In 2017, his graphic novel Même pas vrai, illustrated by Guillaume Perreault, won the prestigious TD Canadian Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award. In 2019, he published a collection of poems, L’œil soldat. In 2020, he published the graphic novel based on his play Le Garçon au visage disparu, illustrated by Pierre Lecrenier. In autumn 2021, the opera L’orangeraie, with music by Zad Moultaka and a libretto by Larry Tremblay, premiered at the Monument-National as a co-production between Chants Libres and the NEM, directed by Pauline Vaillancourt. He also published his latest novel, Tableau final de l’amour, inspired by the life and work of the painter Francis Bacon. In 2023, his play Abraham Lincoln Goes to the Theatre was directed by Catherine Vidal, a production by the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. His play Coup de vieux premiered in 2024, directed by Claude Poissant, in a co-production by the Théâtre du Trident in Québec City and the Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui in Montréal. He has recently published D’enfers et d’enfants and Proches de la nuit. He was recently appointed a Companion of the Arts and Letters of Québec.
