Olivier Arteau

Combining kitsch with tragedy, the farcical with the carnal, Olivier Arteau creates theatrical works of striking contrasts and overwhelming physicality. His sensual staging explores the areas of vulnerability and queer identity while blurring the disciplinary boundaries between theatre, dance, performance, and music. From Doggy dans Gravel (a raw, corrosive portrait of adolescence) to La pudeur des urinoirs (a 72-hour performance piece with Fabien Piché staged in the window of the Centre du Théâtre d’Aujourd’hui, during which he walked on a treadmill in high heels), his work weds formal daring with political inquiry. His plays examine violence, desire, and collective memory with dazzling style, using excess to reflect humanity’s contradictions. After making his debut in 2016, Arteau quickly made a name for himself in Quebec. While still only 30 years old, he was appointed artistic director of Théâtre du Trident, one of the province’s leading theatrical institutions. In 2024, he received a Canada Council for the Arts John Hirsch Prize.
