Biography
For over 20 years, Sherry J. Yoon and Jay Dodge have been making experiential, interdisciplinary works of theatre that reach beyond conventional stages. Whether creating intimate immersive installations, large-scale site activations or performances in unexpected spaces, the pair use collaboration as the foundation of their practice, bringing together artists, audiences and communities in encounters shaped by curiosity, hybridity and invention. Their work is about expanding what theatre can hold. Interviews, design, writing, performance and technology converge in Yoon and Dodge’s aesthetics, resulting in theatrical experiences that are immediate, participatory and transformative.
They co-lead Boca del Lupo, a Vancouver-based company founded in 1996, whose work has toured nationally and internationally and includes more than 60 original creations and presentations. Together, Yoon and Dodge have guided the company through projects that take place in theatres, forests, shipping containers, public spaces and other unconventional environments. During their tenure, Boca del Lupo has received numerous accolades, including Jessie Richardson Awards for Outstanding Design, Outstanding Production, Significant Artistic Achievement and Outstanding Performance, the Critics’ Choice Award for Innovation, the Alcan Performing Arts Award and the Patrick O’Neill Award.
Yoon is a theatre creator and director whose productions have toured across Canada, Europe, Latin America and Mexico; she was a finalist for the 2022 Siminovitch Prize and has also worked with companies and institutions including Richmond Gateway Theatre, Bard on the Beach, the Vancouver International Children’s Festival and the National Arts Centre. Dodge’s writing, performance and design have been central to Boca del Lupo’s original productions, and he has served extensively with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, including as Board President. Together, they continue to build performances rooted in collaboration, artistic risk and new ways for audiences to meet live work.
