Christian Lapointe

Theatre director, author, actor and musician, Christian Lapointe studied theatre at the Conservatoire d’art dramatique de Québec and the National Theatre School. He staged a 70-hour performance at the Festival TransAmériques based on the work of Antonin Artaud. He used theatre to help draft the Quebec Citizens’ Constitution. Since 2001, he has created more than 30 plays, establishing himself as an unconventional figure on the theatre scene. Inspired by Symbolism, he draws on performance art, structuring his stage writing around scenic devices and experimenting with video installations. His productions have been staged at numerous institutions in Quebec, as well as in the official selection of the Avignon Festival, at the Royal Court Theatre in London, at the Schaubühne in Berlin, and on several occasions at the Festival TransAmériques and the National Arts Centre. He also composes the music for LiY, a group he formed with playwright Simon Stephens and artist Laurence Dauphinais. In 2025, he adapted Marguerite Duras’s Hiroshima mon amour for the stage as an operatic play and became a regular columnist for Le Devoir.
